What Is the Camelot Wheel?

The Camelot Wheel (also known as the Camelot System or Harmonic Mixing Wheel) is a tool that simplifies musical key relationships into an easy-to-use number and letter system. Created by Mark Davis, it's become the standard for DJs who want to mix harmonically.

The system assigns each of the 24 musical keys (12 major, 12 minor) a code from 1A to 12B. A codes are minor keys and B codes are major keys. Keys with adjacent numbers and the same letter are compatible, as are keys with the same number but different letters.

Think of it as a simplified Circle of Fifths designed for practical use — you don't need to know music theory to use it. Just match the codes.

How to Use the Camelot Wheel

Three simple rules for harmonic mixing with the Camelot system.

1

Same Number, Switch Letter

Move between A and B with the same number (e.g., 8A <-> 8B). This switches between relative minor and major — always sounds smooth.

2

+1 or -1, Same Letter

Move one number up or down while keeping the same letter (e.g., 8A -> 9A or 7A). This is the most common harmonic mixing move.

3

Energy Boost

Moving up in numbers (+1, +2) gradually increases energy. DJs use this to build momentum throughout a set.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Camelot Wheel is a visual tool that maps musical keys in a circle, making it easy to identify which keys sound good together. It was created by Mark Davis and is widely used by DJs for harmonic mixing — blending tracks that are in compatible keys for smoother transitions.

Find the Camelot code of your current track (most DJ software shows this). Compatible keys are: the same code, one number up with the same letter, one number down with the same letter, or the same number with a different letter (A<->B). Mixing between these keys will sound harmonically pleasing.

A keys represent minor keys and B keys represent major keys. The same number with different letters (e.g., 8A and 8B) are relative minor/major pairs — they share the same notes and always sound compatible.

Absolutely! Producers use the Camelot system to choose compatible keys for layering samples, creating mashups, and transitioning between sections of a track. It's also helpful for choosing keys for remixes.

The Camelot system is essentially a simplified, number-based version of the Circle of Fifths designed for practical use. Instead of needing to know music theory, you just match numbers and letters. The musical relationships are the same.

Moving up one number on the Camelot Wheel (e.g., 8A to 9A) creates a subtle energy increase. Moving up two numbers gives a bigger boost. DJs use this technique to gradually build energy throughout a set.
